Overview

What Makes a Classic Tanzania Safari

When most people picture a Tanzania safari, they are picturing the northern circuit: elephant herds beneath the baobabs of Tarangire, the endless plains of the Serengeti, and a full day on the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater. It is the most celebrated wildlife route in Africa for good reason, and it is the safari we plan more than any other.

What separates a good classic safari from a tiring one is the planning. We keep driving days manageable, give the Serengeti the time it deserves rather than a single rushed night, and time your crater descent for the quieter early morning. On longer routes we often add Lake Manyara or a night in the Karatu highlands between parks.

Every Emnel safari is private: your own vehicle and your own guide, with the day shaped around you. Your journey usually begins and ends in Arusha, where our team is based, and if you would like to finish on the beach, a short flight takes you on to Zanzibar.

Why travel with Emnel

Why Our Classic Safaris Feel Different

01

More time where it matters

We build in at least two nights in the Serengeti on most routes, because that is where the big cats are and where the wildlife moves with the seasons.

02

Less time on the road

Sensible distances between parks, and the option to fly back from the Serengeti instead of a long drive to Arusha.

03

Your own guide and vehicle

A private 4x4 with a pop-up roof and an experienced Emnel guide who stays with you for the whole safari.

04

Lodges chosen for the route

We match each night to the park, the season and your comfort level, and we tell you honestly why we recommend each one.

Where you will go

The Parks of the Northern Circuit

Tarangire National Park

Best for: big elephant herds, baobabs and a quieter start to your safari.

Especially rewarding in the dry season, June to October, when wildlife gathers along the Tarangire River.

Serengeti National Park

Best for: big cats, vast open plains and the Great Migration.

The central Serengeti has resident lion, leopard and cheetah all year.

Ngorongoro Crater

Best for: one of the densest days of game viewing in Africa, including black rhino.

A full day on the crater floor, ideally starting early.

Lake Manyara

Best for: groundwater forest, flamingos in season and a gentle half day between parks.

How Many Days Do You Need?

4 to 5 days covers Tarangire, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater at a comfortable pace, especially if you fly one way. Our 5-Day Classic Tanzania Safari is built exactly this way, and the 4-Day Fly-In Serengeti Safari saves a long drive for travellers short on time.

7 to 10 days lets you slow down: more nights in the Serengeti, a second area of the park depending on the season, and room for Lake Manyara or the highlands. Our 10-Day Classic Tanzania Safari is the unhurried version of the circuit, and the 9-Day Luxury Safari pairs it with some of Tanzania's finest camps.

Travelling with children? Our Tanzania family safaris follow the same parks with a pace and lodges designed around younger travellers.

The Best Time for a Classic Safari

The northern circuit is rewarding all year. June to October is the classic dry season: wildlife concentrates around water, the vegetation thins and game viewing is at its easiest. January to March brings the calving season to the southern Serengeti, with superb predator activity. November and December are green and quieter, with excellent value. The long rains of April and May are the quietest period, and some camps close.

Because the Great Migration moves through the year, we place your Serengeti nights where the herds are likely to be. For a safari built entirely around the herds, see our Great Migration safaris, or read our complete Tanzania safari guide.

Questions

Classic Tanzania Safari FAQs

11 questions answered

Something we haven't covered? Ask us directly — a member of the team replies personally.

Ask a question

What is the northern circuit?

It is Tanzania's best-known safari route: Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, linked by road from Arusha, with the option to fly between parks.

Is every Emnel safari private?

Yes. You have your own vehicle and guide throughout, and the daily pace is set around you.

Will we see the Big Five?

Lion, elephant and buffalo are seen on almost every classic safari. Leopard sightings are common in the Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most reliable places in East Africa for black rhino, though wildlife is never guaranteed.

Are park fees included in the price?

Yes. National park and conservation fees for your itinerary are included in our prices, along with your vehicle, guide, accommodation and the meals specified.

Can we finish with a beach stay?

Yes. A short flight from the Serengeti or Arusha takes you to Zanzibar. See our Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar holidays for ready-made combinations.

How far ahead should we book?

For June to October and the Christmas holidays, six to twelve months ahead gives you the widest choice of camps. Outside those times, a few months is usually enough.

What does a private Tanzania safari cost?

It depends mainly on the season, the number of days and the lodges you choose. Our private northern-circuit itineraries start from about US$3,100 per person for five days in Classic comfort, and rise with Mid-Luxury and Luxury camps. Park and conservation fees are set by the government and make up a significant share of every safari, and they are included in our prices. Every itinerary page shows a starting price per person, and we quote exactly for your dates.

Who will our guide be?

One of Emnel's own guides. The team that plans your safari is the team that runs it. About two weeks before you arrive, we send your trip companion, with your guide's details and everything else you need for the journey.

When is the best time to go on safari in Tanzania?

Tanzania offers excellent game viewing all year. June to October is the classic dry season, with easy game viewing and the migration in the north. January to March brings the calving season in the southern Serengeti. The long rains of April and May are quieter and greener, and some camps close. We will recommend the best timing and route for what you most want to see.

How does booking work?

Tell us your dates and ideas, and we will design an itinerary and send a detailed proposal. To confirm, we ask for a 30% deposit plus any domestic flights, which are issued on confirmation. You then receive your official confirmation, and about two weeks before you travel, your trip companion with every final detail.

Can we add Zanzibar to our safari?

Yes. A short flight from the Serengeti or Arusha takes you to Zanzibar's beaches. We recommend at least one night in Stone Town alongside your beach stay.
