Overview

Why Combine a Safari with Zanzibar

A Tanzania safari is exhilarating: early starts, long golden afternoons and days full of wildlife. Ending on Zanzibar gives the journey a natural exhale, with white sand, warm Indian Ocean water and time to take in everything you have seen.

The two fit together unusually well. Scheduled flights link the Serengeti and Arusha with Zanzibar in a couple of hours, so you can move from a game drive to the coast without losing a day. We arrange the flights, the transfers and every handover, so the joins feel effortless.

We always recommend at least one night in Stone Town, the island's historic heart, with a guided walk that includes the history of the former slave market. Then the beach: we will suggest the right stretch of coast for the season and the kind of stay you have in mind.

Planning the balance

Getting the Balance Right

01

Safari first, beach last

Most guests prefer to finish on the coast, so the safari comes while you are fresh and the beach is your reward.

02

Three to four beach nights

Enough to slow down properly without cutting into your safari. Honeymooners often choose more.

03

Fly, do not drive

Flying out of the Serengeti saves a long drive back to Arusha and gives you an extra half day.

04

Already on Zanzibar?

Our safaris from Zanzibar fly you to the mainland for two to five days and bring you back to the island.

The Best Time for Safari and Zanzibar

Already staying on the island? Choose the 2 Day Safari from Zanzibar, the 3 Day Safari from Zanzibar or the 5 Day Safari from Zanzibar, which adds the Serengeti.

June to October is ideal for both: dry, sunny days on the coast and the easiest game viewing on safari. Late December to February is another excellent window, with warm seas and the calving season in the southern Serengeti. The long rains of April and May bring more rain to the coast, and some beach hotels close.

Ask a question

How do we get from the safari to Zanzibar?

By scheduled light aircraft or domestic flight from the Serengeti or Arusha. We book the flights and arrange your transfers at both ends.

How many beach nights should we plan?

Three or four nights suits most travellers. Honeymooners and families often choose five or more.

Should the beach come first or last?

Most guests finish on the beach, so the safari comes while you are fresh. Starting on Zanzibar also works well if your international flight arrives there.

Can we start our trip on Zanzibar?

Yes. Our safaris from Zanzibar fly you to the mainland for two to five days and return you to the island.

Do you recommend Stone Town?

Yes, at least one night, with a guided walk that includes the history of the former slave market. It adds real depth to a beach holiday.

Are domestic flights included?

Flights specified in your itinerary are included in your proposal. To confirm a booking we ask for a 30% deposit plus the domestic flights, which are issued on confirmation.

What does a private Tanzania safari cost?

It depends mainly on the season, the number of days and the lodges you choose. Our private northern-circuit itineraries start from about US$3,100 per person for five days in Classic comfort, and rise with Mid-Luxury and Luxury camps. Park and conservation fees are set by the government and make up a significant share of every safari, and they are included in our prices. Every itinerary page shows a starting price per person, and we quote exactly for your dates.

Is every Emnel safari private?

Yes. You have your own vehicle and your own guide for the whole safari, and the daily pace, start times and stops are set around you, never around a group.

Who will our guide be?

One of Emnel's own guides. The team that plans your safari is the team that runs it. About two weeks before you arrive, we send your trip companion, with your guide's details and everything else you need for the journey.

When is the best time to go on safari in Tanzania?

Tanzania offers excellent game viewing all year. June to October is the classic dry season, with easy game viewing and the migration in the north. January to March brings the calving season in the southern Serengeti. The long rains of April and May are quieter and greener, and some camps close. We will recommend the best timing and route for what you most want to see.

How does booking work?

Tell us your dates and ideas, and we will design an itinerary and send a detailed proposal. To confirm, we ask for a 30% deposit plus any domestic flights, which are issued on confirmation. You then receive your official confirmation, and about two weeks before you travel, your trip companion with every final detail.

Can we add Zanzibar to our safari?

Yes. A short flight from the Serengeti or Arusha takes you to Zanzibar's beaches. We recommend at least one night in Stone Town alongside your beach stay.
