Overview

Two Countries, One Journey

Kenya and Tanzania share one great ecosystem. The wildebeest migration moves between the Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara, and Kilimanjaro rises over both. Seeing them together, with a finish on Zanzibar, is one of the great journeys in Africa.

We plan and run these trips ourselves as a single private journey, with our own selected guides in Kenya as well as Tanzania, and properties we have chosen personally in both. You might begin in Nairobi and Amboseli, where elephants walk beneath Kilimanjaro, cross into Tanzania for the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, and fly to the coast to finish. We arrange the border crossing, the flights and every handover, so the joins feel seamless.

Wondering how the two countries compare? Read our honest Tanzania vs Kenya safari comparison and our guide to the Serengeti vs the Masai Mara.

Why Emnel

Why Plan Your East Africa Journey with Us

01

One team, both countries

We plan and run the whole journey ourselves, from Arusha, with no hand-off to another company.

02

Our own guides in Kenya too

Our selected guides look after you in Kenya, and our Emnel guides in Tanzania, so the standard never changes at the border.

03

Hand-picked properties

Every lodge and camp is one we have chosen ourselves, for its setting, service and position for the season.

04

Seamless joins

Border crossings, flights and transfers are arranged in advance, with clear guidance on visas, and paced so the journey never feels like a race.

How Long Do You Need?

We recommend at least ten days for Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar together. Our Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar Safari runs for ten days from Nairobi to Zanzibar and starts from US$3,850 per person. With twelve to fourteen days you can add more time in the Serengeti, the Masai Mara or on the beach.

If you would rather focus on one country, our classic Tanzania safaris and Tanzania safari and Zanzibar holidays give you more depth in fewer places.

The Best Time for an East Africa Journey

June to October is the classic dry season across both countries, and from roughly July to October the migration is often in the northern Serengeti and the Masai Mara. January to February is another fine window, with the calving season in the southern Serengeti and warm, settled weather on Zanzibar. We will time your route around what you most want to see.

Grand East Africa Journey FAQs

Ask a question

Do we need visas for both Kenya and Tanzania?

Most nationalities need entry permission for each country. Requirements change, so we send current guidance with your proposal and pre-departure guide.

Is the border crossing difficult?

No. We plan the crossing in advance with your guides on each side, or arrange a flight between the two countries.

Who guides us in Kenya?

One of our own selected guides. We run the Kenya leg ourselves, just as we do in Tanzania, with properties we have hand-picked.

Serengeti or Masai Mara?

They are two halves of the same ecosystem. The Serengeti is far larger and quieter; the Mara is compact and excellent for the river crossings in season. Many travellers see both.

How much does it cost?

Our 10-day Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar journey starts from US$3,850 per person. Your price depends on the season, the length of the trip and your choice of lodges.

What does a private Tanzania safari cost?

It depends mainly on the season, the number of days and the lodges you choose. Our private northern-circuit itineraries start from about US$3,100 per person for five days in Classic comfort, and rise with Mid-Luxury and Luxury camps. Park and conservation fees are set by the government and make up a significant share of every safari, and they are included in our prices. Every itinerary page shows a starting price per person, and we quote exactly for your dates.

Is every Emnel safari private?

Yes. You have your own vehicle and your own guide for the whole safari, and the daily pace, start times and stops are set around you, never around a group.

Who will our guide be?

One of Emnel's own guides. The team that plans your safari is the team that runs it. About two weeks before you arrive, we send your trip companion, with your guide's details and everything else you need for the journey.

When is the best time to go on safari in Tanzania?

Tanzania offers excellent game viewing all year. June to October is the classic dry season, with easy game viewing and the migration in the north. January to March brings the calving season in the southern Serengeti. The long rains of April and May are quieter and greener, and some camps close. We will recommend the best timing and route for what you most want to see.

How does booking work?

Tell us your dates and ideas, and we will design an itinerary and send a detailed proposal. To confirm, we ask for a 30% deposit plus any domestic flights, which are issued on confirmation. You then receive your official confirmation, and about two weeks before you travel, your trip companion with every final detail.

Can we add Zanzibar to our safari?

Yes. A short flight from the Serengeti or Arusha takes you to Zanzibar's beaches. We recommend at least one night in Stone Town alongside your beach stay.
