Day by Day

Day 1 – Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Altitude: 2,100m → 2,650m
Distance: ~6 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Arusha to Londorossi Gate on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. After completing park formalities, you begin trekking through lush rainforest.

This section of the mountain is rich in wildlife, and it is not uncommon to see colobus monkeys moving through the forest canopy.

The trail is gentle and allows you to settle into the rhythm of trekking before arriving at Mti Mkubwa Camp, also known as “Big Tree Camp.”

Day 2 – Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Altitude: 2,650m → 3,500m
Distance: ~8 km
Hiking: Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland

Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail climbs steadily into open moorland landscapes. The vegetation begins to change dramatically, with giant heathers and volcanic rock formations dominating the scenery.

As you gain altitude, the first expansive views of Mount Kilimanjaro begin to appear.

You arrive at Shira 1 Camp, located on the western edge of the Shira Plateau.

Day 3 – Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Altitude: 3,500m → 3,850m
Distance: ~7 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Moorland

Today is a shorter trekking day designed to help with acclimatization. The trail crosses the vast Shira Plateau, one of the most spectacular high-altitude landscapes on Mount Kilimanjaro.

On clear days, you may see dramatic views of Kibo Peak, the summit cone you will eventually climb.

The afternoon is often used for rest or a short acclimatization walk.

Day 4 – Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Altitude: 3,850m → 4,630m → 3,960m
Distance: ~10 km
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
 

This is an important acclimatization day following the principle of “climb high, sleep low.”

The trail gradually climbs to Lava Tower, a dramatic volcanic rock formation at 4,630m.

After lunch near Lava Tower, you descend to Barranco Camp, located in a sheltered valley below the impressive Barranco Wall.

Day 5 – Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Altitude: 3,960m → 4,035m
Distance: ~5 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
 

The day begins with the climb up the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical scramble that is often one of the most memorable parts of the climb.

Once at the top, the trail continues across valleys and ridges before reaching Karanga Camp, where you rest and prepare for the summit push.

Day 6 – Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Altitude: 4,035m → 4,640m
Distance: ~4 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
 

A shorter but important trekking day brings you to Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt.

From here you have spectacular views of the glaciers and the summit slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.

After an early dinner, you rest before beginning the summit climb around midnight.

Day 7 – Summit Day: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak via Stella Point – Descend to Mweka Camp

Altitude: 4,640m → 5,756m → 5,895m → 3,100m
Distance: ~17 km
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
Habitat: Arctic / Moorland
 

Your summit push begins shortly after midnight. Headlamps illuminate the trail as you climb slowly toward the crater rim.

After several hours of steady climbing you reach Stella Point at sunrise. From here, a final gradual walk leads you to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

After celebrating at the summit, you descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp.

Day 8 – Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Altitude: 3,100m → 1,640m
Distance: ~10 km

The final descent takes you through beautiful rainforest as you make your way to Mweka Gate.

At the gate, you receive your summit certificates and say goodbye to your mountain crew before returning to Arusha to celebrate your achievement.
