The Complete Guide to Planning a Family Safari in Tanzania
Planning a safari with children is exciting, but it also comes with important decisions. Parents want to know their children will be safe, comfortable, and genuinely enjoy the experience. This guide answers the most common questions families have and helps you understand what to expect before booking a safari in Tanzania.
If you are already considering specific routes and travel dates, you can explore our private Tanzania family safari itineraries designed around different ages, budgets, and travel styles.
Is Tanzania Safe for a Family Safari?
Safety is usually the first concern parents have when considering a safari. Tanzania is widely regarded as one of the safest and most stable safari destinations in East Africa, with well‑established tourism infrastructure and strict national park regulations.
On safari, your family is accompanied by a professional driver‑guide who is trained in wildlife behavior, defensive driving, and guest safety. Game drives take place inside designated park roads, and lodges provide clear safety briefings upon arrival. At night, many camps escort guests between their rooms and common areas, ensuring that families feel secure at all times.
Medical support is accessible throughout northern Tanzania, with reputable hospitals in Arusha and emergency evacuation services available from major parks. With proper planning and an experienced operator, a family safari is considered a safe and well‑managed travel experience.
What Is the Best Age for Children to Go on Safari?
Families successfully travel on safari with children of many different ages, but the experience is often most enjoyable from around four or five years old. At this age, children are usually able to sit comfortably during game drives and are curious enough to stay engaged with wildlife sightings.
Younger children can still enjoy a safari when the itinerary is designed with shorter drives, flexible schedules, and accommodation that provides space to relax between activities. School‑aged children often find safaris educational and exciting, while teenagers typically appreciate the sense of adventure, photography opportunities, and independence that a private safari provides.
Choosing the right pace and daily schedule based on your children’s ages makes a significant difference to how relaxed and enjoyable the trip feels for the entire family.
What a Typical Day on a Family Safari Looks Like
A safari day usually begins early, when wildlife is most active. Families wake before sunrise, enjoy a light breakfast, and head out on a morning game drive to look for predators, elephants, giraffes, and other animals as they start their day.
By late morning, you return to your lodge or camp for a full breakfast and time to rest. This mid‑day break is especially important for children, giving them time to swim, read, or simply relax. In the afternoon, you head out again for another game drive, often returning at sunset when the landscape is at its most beautiful.
This rhythm of activity followed by rest helps keep children engaged without becoming overtired, which is one of the reasons private safaris work so well for families.
The Best National Parks in Tanzania for Families
Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti offers some of the most iconic wildlife viewing in Africa, with vast plains, large herds of grazing animals, and regular predator sightings. It is ideal for families who want the classic safari experience and are comfortable with slightly longer travel distances between regions.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the easiest places in Africa to see a wide variety of animals in a single day. Because wildlife remains inside the crater year‑round, families often enjoy very productive game drives without needing to travel far, which helps keep younger children engaged.
Tarangire National Park
Tarangire is especially popular with families thanks to its large elephant herds and beautiful baobab landscapes. It is also one of the closest parks to Arusha, making it a convenient first or last stop on a family safari and reducing travel fatigue
How Long Should a Family Safari be?
A five‑day safari can provide an excellent introduction to Tanzania’s wildlife, especially when focusing on nearby parks. However, many families prefer a seven‑ to nine‑day itinerary, which allows for a more relaxed pace, fewer long drives, and additional time to enjoy lodges and scenery.
Longer safaris of ten days or more are often best suited to families with older children or teenagers who are comfortable with extended travel. Some families also choose to combine a safari with a few days on the beaches of Zanzibar, creating a balance between wildlife adventure and relaxation.
How Much Does a Family Safari in Tanzania Cost?
The cost of a family safari depends on travel season, accommodation style, and the number of people traveling. Families can choose between mid‑range lodges, luxury tented camps, and exclusive private camps, each offering different levels of comfort, location, and service.
Children often receive discounted accommodation rates and, in some cases, reduced park fees when sharing with parents. Traveling outside peak migration months can also reduce overall costs while still providing excellent wildlife viewing.
If you would like a tailored estimate based on your family size, travel dates, and preferred level of comfort, our team can prepare a custom quotation with no obligation.
Where Families Stay on Safari
Family accommodation in Tanzania is designed to be comfortable, secure, and flexible. Many lodges offer interconnecting rooms or family suites, while tented camps provide spacious tents with proper beds, en‑suite bathrooms, and solid flooring.
Staff are experienced in hosting families and can arrange earlier meal times, child‑friendly menus, and flexible activity schedules. Choosing the right mix of lodges and camps helps ensure that both parents and children remain comfortable throughout the journey.
What to Pack for a Safari with Children
Packing for a safari is simpler than many families expect. Lightweight clothing in neutral colors works best during game drives, while a warm layer is useful for early mornings. Comfortable closed shoes, sun hats, and sunglasses are also important in the African sun.
Families should also bring sunscreen, any personal medications, and a few small comfort items for younger children, such as a favorite book or travel game. These familiar items help children settle quickly into new environments and stay relaxed during travel days.
Common Concerns Parents Have Before Booking
Parents often worry that children might become bored during long drives or that the experience may be too physically demanding. In practice, most children remain fascinated by the constant movement of animals, the changing landscapes, and the sense of adventure that comes with being in the wild.
Another common concern is connectivity. While many lodges offer Wi‑Fi, it can be limited in remote areas. Many families ultimately appreciate this, as it encourages children to disconnect from screens and fully engage with the natural environment.
Why a Private Safari Is Best for Families
A private safari gives your family full control over the pace of the trip. You can start game drives later if children are tired, spend longer at sightings that interest them, or return to camp early when needed. This flexibility is not possible on shared group safaris, where schedules must accommodate multiple travelers.
Private travel also allows your guide to tailor explanations and activities to your children’s interests, turning each game drive into an interactive and educational experience rather than a fixed schedule.

What Our Customers Say About Us!

Wonderful 6 day private tour of 3 quite different parks in Kenya organised by Nelson. We started at the Masai Mara for two nights where we saw a huge variety of animals, then onto Lake Nakuru which was great for birds and white rhinos. Lastly we went to Amboseli for hundreds of elephants in particular against the stunning back drop of Mt Kilimanjaro. Our guide throughout, Alfred, was incredibly experienced and sought out the best viewing points throughout. The Sopa Lodges we stayed in were so welcoming and we had some amazing views from our rooms, including having Zebras grazing right outside one evening. Nelson was great in advising where we should go. We opted for a private tour, whilst more expensive, we did like having the jeep to ourselves and having a bit more flexibility and space which we appreciated given it was a bit of a lifetime experience. I would totally recommend Nelson to organise your tour. We were booking from the UK and wanted to go direct to an operator on the ground. I knew Nelson from a business contact and totally trusted him to look after us. Book Emnel with confidence!

We had a great experience on our 3 day safari. We want to thank our guide Gabriel who was so kind and did everything for us to have the best time. We didn’t get the chance to meet Nelson but we appreciate his patience with us before the trip with our many questions. We would definitely recommend Emnel adventures, they truly care for their guests. Thank you so much, we couldn’t have asked for a better safari! / Dilan, Ceren & Shirin from Stockholm

I hope this review really articulates how incredibly impressed we were with Emnel Adventures and the experience they created for us. After contacting a few Safari companies, we quickly realised that Emnel was the company for us. Right from the start, Nelson (our travel consultant) was quick to respond with answers for my many questions. We presented him with an overview of what we wanted to do, but it was Nelson's knowledge and guidance regarding locations and accommodation which really pulled the itinerary together. He worked really hard to put together a trip which suited us as a family of 4. The safari itself was incredible - we were extremely lucky to see just about everything we wanted to see, including TWO wildebeest river crossings. With a private vehicle, we were comfortable and well provided for throughout the trip. The selected accommodations were beautiful and considering the isolated locations, the food was fantastic. We were provided with full board and despite being a set menu, the choices were refined, well judged and excellent quality. My 12 and 14 year old sons certainly had no complaints! A real highlight was the lovely surprise arranged for us on Day 1 of the safari. It was our Wedding Anniversary and whilst we were perfectly happy with the proposed packed lunch, we were instead presented with a fully catered 3 course meal with silver service and wine. It was a wonderful surprise when we pulled up at an amazing viewing point to find a huge team of staff (including a visit from Nelson!) ready to greet and serve us. Very special! Gabriel the guide was extremely knowledgeable and made sure we saw everything! He was also a lot of fun, with a great sense of humour and this was great for our boys - they interacted really well and Gabriel's passion really kept them interested. I would 100% recommend the team to anyone. In fact, I hope we get to use them again in the not too distant future. Thank you Team Emnel.

Just coming back from a 5-day safari booked with Emnel Adventures. It was a mind blowing experience all through. Booking experience very individualized have done also research and suggested things and Nelson who is handling the travel proposals allways very nice and took my input into account. If he thought something else better he told me. Allways had feeling that he wants the best experience According to my wishes. I changed mind / dates etc several times he allways stayed calm and changed travel accordingly. The safari was absolutely exceeding expectations. Already the welcome at the airport with 3 men and nice table / coffee / tea and snacks to introduce the tour. Nelson was there for the welcome and my tour guide Rahim and as a surprise my personal photographer Abisae. I went then on 5 days trip / 4 nights on safari with Rahim and Abisae. Rahim studied tourism and has an education in safari tours and 20 years experience and this you feel he know everything on animals why an animal looks like it looks, how close. I felt like a princess both very attentive lunches in nice sceneries great with beers and wines offered. Other groups had lunch boxes we a really meal in comfy chairs. Hotels perfect as expected. Was quite sad after the 5 days to leave the 2 guys. The safari for me Was every penny worth it and you need to feel yourself how it feels and I can 100% recommend Emnel Adventures with Nelson and my Tour guide Rahim and Abisae. Was all perfect experience. Usually I do not write TripAdvisor reviews. But this experience was so good that I would like also that others can do these experiences as well.

Thank you very much Nelson for the organization, the help, the professionalism and this unique experience! I highly recommend Emnel.

Couldn’t have gone better. First safari for us, my brother and a friend of mine, it was well organized, we had an amazing tour guid and an excellent photographer with us. Luck was on our side, as we saw almost everything in abondance. The food was really good and the lodge were 💯. Only down side was the camping lodge in Ngorogoro the last day, which I recommend to go to an other place ! But other then that, don’t hesitate ! (Ask for Beatus for Guide )
