Mikumi

Southern Tanzania's most accessible safari: open floodplains with lions, elephants, giraffe and hippo pools, within reach of Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.

Overview

Why go to Mikumi

Mikumi National Park lies in southern Tanzania, around four to five hours by road from Dar es Salaam. At its centre is the Mkata floodplain, a wide, open grassland ringed by mountains, where zebra, buffalo, giraffe, elephants and lions are easy to see.

Bordering the vast Nyerere National Park, Mikumi is the closest real safari to Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, which makes it ideal for a short safari, a first taste of the bush, or a quieter southern route that avoids the busier northern parks.

Why go to Mikumi?

Mikumi is the most accessible national park in southern Tanzania, and the closest proper safari to Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. Its heart is the Mkata floodplain, a broad open grassland ringed by mountains, where wildlife is easy to see and the landscape feels genuinely wild.

It is often called the 'Serengeti of the South', but we prefer to judge it on its own terms. Mikumi is smaller, has no migration and fewer predators than the Serengeti; what it offers is uncrowded game viewing within reach of the coast, which makes it ideal for guests with limited time or those adding a short safari to a beach holiday.

Wildlife at Mikumi

The open plains hold zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, impala and eland, along with giraffe browsing the acacia fringes. Lions are seen regularly, and elephants move between the plains and the surrounding woodland. The hippo pools in the north of the park are a reliable highlight, often shared with crocodiles and wading birds.

Mikumi borders the vast Nyerere National Park to the south, so animals move freely across a much larger wilderness than the park's boundary suggests.

Field Notes

A main highway crosses part of the park, and you may see wildlife from the road itself. Our guides head away from it quickly, into the floodplain tracks where the game viewing is quieter and far more rewarding.

Getting there

From Dar es Salaam, the drive to Mikumi takes around four to five hours. The standard-gauge railway to Morogoro now shortens part of the journey for those who prefer the train. Light aircraft can also fly into the park, which is the most comfortable option for guests coming from Zanzibar.

For a short taste, our 1-Day Mikumi National Park Safari makes the most of a single day. For a better experience, we recommend at least one night, so you can enjoy the park in the early morning and late afternoon light.

Did You Know?

Mikumi forms part of one of Africa's largest connected wildlife areas, joined to Nyerere National Park to the south and close to the forested Udzungwa Mountains to the west.

How long and what to combine

One or two nights is right for Mikumi on its own. It combines well with the forest walks and waterfalls of the Udzungwa Mountains, with Ruaha for a longer southern circuit, or with a few days on Zanzibar or Mafia Island.

If you have more time and want big-game drama, we may suggest Nyerere or the northern parks instead — and we will tell you honestly which suits you. Share your dates and we will plan the right route.

Good to know

Mikumi — your questions, answered

Honest, specific answers to the questions we're asked most about this destination.

General

When is the best time to visit Mikumi National Park?

June to October is the best time, when short grass and limited water make wildlife easiest to see on the Mkata floodplain. November to March is green and good for birding. April and May bring the heaviest rain, and some tracks can become difficult.

Is Mikumi really the 'Serengeti of the South'?

It's a marketing comparison worth taking with some scepticism. The landscape does resemble open savanna, but Mikumi is far smaller, has no migration, and lower predator density — it's a genuinely different park worth judging on its own terms.

How far is Mikumi from Dar es Salaam?

Roughly 300 km, taking 4 to 6 hours by road depending on traffic, or a short flight to the park's airstrip.

Is Mikumi part of the northern or southern circuit?

The southern circuit — it's the gateway park for trips built around Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar rather than Arusha.

Is there a rhino population at Mikumi?

No. Poaching eliminated the park's black rhino population, and no confirmed reintroduction has taken place as of this guide's writing.

Is Mikumi worth visiting?

Yes, if you want a genuine safari close to Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar with limited time. It offers reliable sightings of elephants, lions, giraffe and buffalo with few other vehicles. For a longer trip with more variety, Nyerere, Ruaha or the northern parks offer more.

Wildlife

Will we see elephants and lions?

Both are realistic, reliable expectations on the Mkata Floodplain, particularly in the dry season.

What makes Mikumi's antelope species different?

The miombo woodland hills hold sable antelope, greater kudu and eland — species associated with woodland habitat rather than the open savanna specialists seen further north.

Are African wild dogs common here?

More secure than almost anywhere on the northern circuit, thanks to Mikumi's direct connection to the wider Selous-Nyerere ecosystem, though a sighting still isn't guaranteed on any single visit.

Planning & Cost

How much does it cost to visit Mikumi?

Foreign visitors currently pay around USD 30 per adult per 24 hours in park fees, plus a concession fee of roughly USD 25 per adult per night for guests staying inside the park — both more moderate than northern-circuit fees.

Should we combine Mikumi with the Serengeti and Ngorongoro?

It's logistically difficult given the distance between the two circuits — Mikumi combines far more naturally with Udzungwa, Nyerere, or a Dar es Salaam / Zanzibar trip.

Is the highway through the park dangerous?

It requires real caution — documented wildlife collisions are a genuine, ongoing issue, and reduced speed near the park is essential, not optional.

How many days do we need in Mikumi?

One or two nights is ideal. A day trip from Dar es Salaam is possible, but the drive is long, so staying overnight lets you enjoy the best early-morning and late-afternoon game drives.
