Why go to Serengeti National Park

Where the land runs on forever, and the story never stops. The Serengeti is the plain that gave Tanzania its safari reputation — an unbroken sweep of golden grassland, ancient granite kopjes and acacia woodland that has drawn travellers, filmmakers and scientists for more than a century. It holds one of the highest concentrations of large predators on the continent, and it is home to the Great Wildebeest Migration, the largest overland movement of animals left on Earth. Few places reward patience and quiet observation quite like it. The park changes character with the calendar. Between December and March, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves are born on the short-grass plains of the south, drawing lion, cheetah and hyena into close range. As the dry season builds, close to two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move north and west in search of grazing, crossing the Grumeti and Mara rivers along the way. Whichever month you travel, the Serengeti has something worth witnessing — a river crossing, a leopard settled in a sausage tree, or simply first light over Naabi Hill while the plains are still cool. Every Emnel Serengeti safari is designed from Arusha, where our team is based and where most of our guides grew up. Rather than sending guests out on a fixed circuit, we choose the regions, camps and pace of each trip around the season travelled and what matters most to see — migration drama, quiet predator country, or the stillness of the eastern plains. Guests are guided by people who read this landscape for a living, and who know it well enough to slow down when it matters. The Serengeti is Tanzania's oldest national park and one of the last places on Earth where an entire ecosystem — predators, prey and the grasslands that sustain them — still functions largely undisturbed. The migration is its best-known chapter, but resident wildlife keeps game viewing exceptional in every season, which is why the park anchors most first-time Tanzania itineraries and rewards repeat visits just as well. The terrain is more varied than “endless plains” suggests. Sweeping short-grass plains in the south give way to granite kopjes, riverine forest along the Grumeti and Mara, and wooded hills in the north — each hosting a different mix of wildlife. Days can pass with barely another vehicle in sight, which is increasingly rare in East African safari country and one of the clearest reasons to build extra time into a Serengeti itinerary rather than passing through.
