Which Part of Zanzibar Is Best for Families with Children?

  • 7 min read

This is one of the most practical questions parents ask when planning a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach holiday — and one of the most under-explained. Most guides list the beaches, describe them in similar glowing terms, and leave the choice to you. Very few explain the single most important factor for families: tidal flats.

The coast you choose in Zanzibar matters more than the lodge you book. Choose the wrong coast and your children will stand on exposed sand several hundred metres from the water for hours every day. Choose the right one and they will swim from breakfast to sunset.

Here is the honest version — from guides who send families to Zanzibar regularly and speak to them when they return. If you are still deciding how many nights to spend, read our guide first: How Many Days in Zanzibar After Safari.

The Most Important Factor for Families: Tidal Flats

Zanzibar is a low-lying coral island. On its east and southeast coasts, the seabed extends gently outward at low tide, exposing large areas of sand and rock that make swimming impossible for three to five hours each day. On the north coast, the reef drops more steeply, and tidal variation does not expose the same flats.

For adults on a honeymoon safari or activity-focused trip, tidal flats are a minor inconvenience. You swim at high tide, use the pool mid-afternoon, and plan excursions around the rhythm. For families with children aged three to ten who want to run in and out of the water all day, tidal flats are a genuine problem.

The North Coast: Our Recommendation for Families

The north coast — specifically Nungwi and Kendwa — is where we send the majority of our family groups. Both beaches offer year-round swimming independent of the tide, warm shallow water suitable for young children, and a range of family-appropriate water activities.

Nungwi

Nungwi sits at the northernmost tip of Zanzibar. The beach is wide, the sand is white, and the water is calm and warm. It is the most developed of Zanzibar's beach areas, with lodge options across the mid-range to luxury spectrum. The village of Nungwi is lively without being overwhelming, and fishing dhows in the harbour give children a genuine sense of island life beyond the resort.

Sunsets at Nungwi over the Zanzibar Channel at 6pm are consistently spectacular and easily accessible from any property on this coast.

Best for: families with children of all ages, first visits to Zanzibar, year-round travel including UK and European school holidays.

Lodge options: Nungwi Beach Hotel (reliable mid-range, direct beach access, family rooms available), Zuri Zanzibar (boutique, design-conscious, stronger at the higher end of mid-range).

Kendwa

Kendwa is ten minutes south of Nungwi along the north coast. Smaller, quieter, and with fewer beach vendors. Properties tend toward boutique. Like Nungwi, Kendwa benefits from year-round swimming with no tidal flat issue.

We often send honeymooners to Kendwa — but it works well for families with older children (ten and above) who want a calmer, less stimulating environment. Younger children who enjoy energy around them generally do better at Nungwi.

Best for: families with older children, couples, travellers wanting a quieter beach without sacrificing swimming access.

Lodge options: White Sands Luxury Villas & Spa, Kendwa Rocks Beach Hotel.

The Northeast Coast: Matemwe

Matemwe sits on the northeast coast, directly opposite Mnemba Atoll — one of the finest snorkelling and dive sites in the western Indian Ocean. For families with confident swimmer children interested in marine life, Matemwe makes a strong case.

However: Matemwe has tidal flats. Swimming is tide-dependent, which means it is not all-day beach access for young children. The trade-off is its proximity to Mnemba Atoll, which is unmatched for families where snorkelling is a priority. Children comfortable with a mask and snorkel — generally from around age eight — can take boat trips to the atoll, where they will encounter hawksbill turtles, dolphins, and reef fish in abundance.

Best for: families with older children (eight and above) who are strong swimmers and specifically want marine wildlife experiences at Mnemba Atoll.

Lodge options: Matemwe Lodge (14 bungalows, elevated position, excellent snorkelling access); &Beyond Mnemba Island Lodge (private island, ten banda rooms, no day visitors — ultra-luxury for families comfortable at that level).

The Southeast Coast: Paje and Bwejuu — Our Honest Assessment

We are direct about this: the southeast coast is not our first recommendation for families with young children.

Paje is one of the world's finest kitesurfing destinations. The consistent southeast trade winds between June and September and the large tidal flats that make kitesurfing excellent are exactly what make it unsuitable for families wanting all-day swimming. Beautiful. Wrong conditions for children who want to be in the water.

Bwejuu is quieter than Paje and home to Baraza Resort & Spa — one of Zanzibar's finest properties, with 30 Swahili villas and an Anantara spa. We send honeymooners there regularly. But tidal flats are present, and for families with children under ten, we steer them north.

For families with older teenagers (fourteen and above) who kitesurf or dive, Paje and Bwejuu become more relevant — the activities available are genuinely exciting for active older children.

Best Family-Friendly Lodges in Zanzibar

Our recommendations are based on guest feedback and personal familiarity — not commission arrangements.

Nungwi Beach Hotel — Nungwi: Reliable mid-range. Direct beach access, family rooms available, good pool, consistent quality. Our most frequently recommended mid-range family property on the island.

Zuri Zanzibar — Nungwi: The most design-focused property on the north coast. Boutique, with a strong beach and good food. Suits families wanting something more considered than a standard resort.

Matemwe Lodge — Matemwe: For families specifically seeking marine wildlife. 14 bungalows in an elevated position. Excellent snorkelling access. Best for families with confident swimmer children aged eight and above.

The Residence Zanzibar — Kizimkazi: 66 villas, ESPA spa, excellent facilities on the south coast near Kizimkazi's dolphin-watching waters. Suits larger family groups wanting generous space. Tidal conditions at Kizimkazi vary — speak to us before booking.

Activities for Children in Zanzibar

  • Glass-bottom boat trips: The most accessible marine experience for non-swimmers and younger children. Boats anchor above the reef; children look through a glass panel at the fish below. Works from around age four.

  • Snorkelling excursions: Dhow trips to reef areas near Nungwi, or boat trips to Mnemba Atoll from Matemwe. Suitable for confident swimmers aged eight and above with adult supervision.

  • Spice tours: Zanzibar's spice trade heritage is genuinely engaging for children aged eight and above. Guides explain cinnamon, vanilla, lemongrass, and cloves in a way children remember. One of the more educational activities on the island.

  • Stone Town visit: For children aged eight to twelve, one morning in Stone Town — the Forodhani Gardens fish market, the Old Fort, a walk through the carved-door streets — is one of the most memorable cultural experiences available. Keep it to a morning.

  • Dolphin watching at Kizimkazi: Early morning boat trips from the south coast to observe spinner and bottlenose dolphins. Genuinely exciting for children aged six and above.

How We Build a Family Safari and Zanzibar Itinerary

For most families the journey looks like this: fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), Tanzania family safari in Tarangire and the Serengeti (five to seven nights), then a fly-in flight with Coastal Aviation or Air Excel from Seronera airstrip to Zanzibar — arriving by midday.

We place most families on the north coast: Nungwi for those who want activity and energy, Kendwa for those who want calm. Four nights is our standard recommendation for families. For a full breakdown of night count by traveller type, see: How Many Days in Zanzibar After Safari.

If you are starting from Zanzibar and want to build the safari from there, we also run safaris from Zanzibar for guests already on the island. For the complete combined itinerary guide, see our Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar planning page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Zanzibar safe for young children?

Yes. Zanzibar is a well-established family holiday destination. On the north coast, water conditions are calm and suitable for young children. Malaria precautions are necessary — consult a travel health clinic before departure. DEET-based repellent and mosquito nets are standard at all quality lodges.

What is the minimum age for a Zanzibar beach holiday?

There is no minimum age for the beach component. Infants and toddlers travel to Zanzibar regularly. For the safari leg, most lodges in the Serengeti and Tarangire accept children from five or six years old. We can advise on properties that welcome younger children.

How many nights in Zanzibar for a family?

We recommend four nights as the minimum for families. This gives one recovery day after safari, two genuine beach days, and one activity day. For the full breakdown by schedule and traveller type, see our guide: How Many Days in Zanzibar After Safari.

Nungwi or Kendwa for families?

Nungwi for families with younger children (under ten) who want energy and activity around them. Kendwa for families with older children who prefer a calmer, quieter atmosphere. Both have year-round swimming. The difference is atmosphere and pace, not quality.

Can children snorkel at Mnemba Atoll?

Children who are confident swimmers and comfortable with a mask and snorkel can snorkel at Mnemba Atoll from approximately age eight or nine. The boat trip from Matemwe takes 20 minutes. Guides are experienced with children. The reef is shallow in places and accessible for supervised young snorkellers.

Is there a Tanzania safari option designed for first-time visitors?

Yes — we have a dedicated guide for first-time Tanzania safari visitors covering park selection, timing, and what to expect. Many families travelling with children are visiting Africa for the first time, and the guide addresses these questions directly.
